Kamagasaki

I have forgotten his name but I could never forget his stories.

He is one of the 25,000 day workers in Kamagasaki who are without jobs or homes. He is one of those brought from the many provincial districts of Japan to work in Osaka during the industrial boom in the 1970s.

Day workers are, by the virtue of their name, only have one-day jobs. Their contracts end at the setting of the sun. And when the sun rises and shines, their shot at work will forever be eclipsed by the unavailability of work and somehow the negligence of the government.

One can see through his eyes the pain, the tiredness, the longing for redemption. Yet he continues on. Despite a criminal charge filed against him by the police, he remains vigilant.

Struggle shines brightly in dark Kamagasaki.
